Frommer's TURKEY

Urgup Evi Tucked into the village life of the neighborhood of Esbeili, this hotel is a superb alternative if Siiha's place is booked up, which it is prone to be. Like many hotels in the area, the Urgiip Evi has polished up a group of caves and magically converted them into a collection of charming guest rooms. Traditional Anatolian moldings and intricately carved alcoves were kept in the renovation of the caves, creating yet another spectacular opportunity to sleep in a modern prehistoric world. The newer section reflects the best of the lot; bathrooms are ones you'd be proud to have in your own home, with delicate little touches like herbal soap and potpourri at the ready. The owners of the Urgiip Evi certainly make you feel at home, as they've put their kitchen and laundry facilities at the disposal of guests.

The Little Hotel Book

The cave dwellings of Cappadocia are not just fascinating exotica: furnished to modern standards, they also make delightful homes. Many outsiders - city Turks as well as foreigners - have made that discovery in recent years, and the Cappadocian cave market is booming.

Faruk Maden, a stone-master who chipped out a few of the most brilliant cave conversions in Urgiip, has reserved his crowning achievement as his own hotel, which he runs in person with open-hearted hospitality. This is a g-room cave compound surrounding a sun-filled court near the top ofUrgup's fascinating Cave Hill. The rooms retain many original details like carved ornaments, niches and winepresses that have origins lost in remote antiquity. The lounge/restaurant is a treasure trove of hidden recesses and whimsically fashioned interior spaces. Rented as pan of the same establishment is the Mary Hall cave-house next door, probably the cosiest private home we have come across in all Turkey.
